Take Off (Impact Zone)

Take Off (Impact Zone) Review

See more picture

When I picked up this book, I was doubtful. My friends recommended it, but the picture of the girl in the bikini turned my opinions sour, considering I'm a girl (and I was a little afraid to read it in public.) I quickly finished it in about an hour and was mildly impressed. Kai, a good-looking 15 year old, moves to Sun Haven (a beach town in a Northeastern state) with his father, Pat, and his half-brother, Sean, whose spirits have been crushed by Pat. He's very gullible and not bright. Pat, by contrast, is a conniving businessman. He sets up custom t-shirt shops in different cities all over the US for months at a time, using such schemes as charging whatever he wants for each customer and not paying taxes to make as much money at each location. Before each customer realizes he was conned, Pat, Sean and Kai are gone. Kai used to live in Hawaii and surfed constantly, but his mother died two years ago and he moved to the mainland with Pat. There is more to the story than that, but you don't find out the whole deal until Close Out, the third book in the Impact Zone series. When Pat opens shop at the beginning of the summer in Sun Haven, Kai is thrilled. Sun Haven is a surfing town and Kai hasn't surfed in 2 years. He meets a good-natured drunk, Curtis, one of his first friends in the book, who gives him a wet suit and an old surfboard. Kai wants to surf the best waves near the jetty at the Sun Haven beach, but it's dominated by the locals who don't want anyone invading their space, called Screamers. The lame waves on the other side of the jetty are called Sewers. Kai meets many characters on his quest to open up Screamers to everyone, including lovable Shauna (who has a big crush on Kai), Bean and Booger, 18 and 14, a happy pair who prove to be loyal friends, and Jade, a beautiful vixen-type girl who, ahem, WANTS Kai. A man named "Buzzy" Frank owns the local surf shop and most of the town, and he's got a son, Lucas, who is leader of the hostile surfing locals. It seems that this summer would be the best one Kai would ever have, since Hawaii.

Todd Strasser uses a lot of surfing terminology. Most is not explained, but it's pretty easy to see what he's talking about. Kai is a noble, all-around great guy, but he's handsome and seems more into one night stands than a lasting relationship with someone. All girls will agree with me here, I think, that is makes one think less of Kai (especially since Shauna is pretty, smart, funny, and is totally into Kai. She would make a good girlfriend, while Jade doesn't want commitment.) The characters aren't developed for the most part and Strasser focuses heavily on a far-fetched plot. I also never really understood why the book is called Take Off. Is it because the series is taking off? Or is it a surfing term? Don't know. The fact of the matter is, this is a good book. It was interesting to read a surfing book from the perspective of someone who really understands it (And isn't a shubee poseur, like so much of America who buys surfing gear.) Surfing is a seriously cool sport, akin to lacrosse, that not many of America's teens participate in and want to know more about. Surfing books are a nitch, I think. If you are looking for a cool, short read, you should buy this book. It's not the best book for teens in the world, (Can't Get There from Here, another book by Strasser, is excellent) but it's commendable.
The Verdict: Get it from the library! Impact Zone: The most dangerous part of the wave. You gotta beat it...or you'll eat it.

Kai is stoked when he gets to Sun Haven. He hasn't been on a board in a while. And SH has some primo waves.

Screamers is the spot where you can regularly get tubed. Only it's patrolled by locals who keep it to themselves. They'll only let Kai into the lineup if he competes against one of them. This is everything Kai hates about surfing -- the competition, the commercialism. He's a free surfer at heart. But if he doesn't take the challenge, he'll lose what he lives for: da kine waves.

Time to Spare - Jessie -
When i frist saw this book i was not really shure if i should read it. After getting it it took about 2 weeks before i desided to finally read the book. This book was fairly good not the best book i've read but i did enjoy reding it. This book is about a 15-year old kid who live with his father and half brother. He loves surfing and loves the beach. when he gets to sun heaven were he once again has the opportunity to surf one again. Ones he starts surfing he didcovers that he id not welcome sice he is the new kid . the only way he will be able to surf is if he competes but the proble with this is that he hates competing. Over all this is a fairly good book and if you like sufing you should read it.

Doping: Sport & Action

Doping: Sport & Action Review

See more picture

Learn about the history of Doping in sport with iMinds insightful knowledge series.

The will to win. The desire to be the best. The need to lift heavier or run faster than anybody has done before. These are all important motivators for success in sport. But they also contribute to the incredible pressure on athletes to do whatever it takes to improve their performance. The practice of ‘doping’ in sport has been around for over a century. And yet it is only quite recently that there has been widespread disapproval of it.
The word ‘doping’ comes from the name of a stimulant drink used in tribal ceremonies in South Africa in the 1700s. ‘Dop’ first appeared in the English language in the late nineteenth century when it was used to describe a potion used to reduce the performance of racehorses. Today, ‘doping’ commonly refers to the practice of using non-natural means to improve a person’s performance.

iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

American Rally Action 2

American Rally Action 2 Review

See more picture

Bought the book because the car I'm codriving in is one of the pictures. Aside from that, it's nice because it's full of great rally shots from all of the major rallies. It's racing where split seconds count. Where teams keep going even after rolling their cars. Where nerve, skill, and luck, combine to get rally teams to the finish line. Motorsport photographer Ronnie Arnold has again captured the thrill and action of the sport during the 2006 season of the Rally America Championship and the U.S. Rally Championship series. His camera followed outstanding international teams of drivers and co-drivers on stages that tested their speed and endurance and their cars' performance. Follow Travis Pastrana, Ken Block and Tanner Foust as they compete for honors in the 2006 season. Subaru, Mitsubishi, Ford, Dodge and many more are represented. American Rally Action 2 is the top chronicle of the 2006 season. Hundreds of brilliant action photographs of cars and competitors, plus the event results, will bring back memories of the unforgettable races and even more unforgettable drivers.

The 2009-2014 Outlook for Non-Electronic Non-Sports-Oriented Action and Skill Games in the United States

The 2009-2014 Outlook for Non-Electronic Non-Sports-Oriented Action and Skill Games in the United States Review

See more picture

This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for non-electronic non-sports-oriented action and skill games across the states and cities of the United States. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,300 cities in the United States. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's state and of the United States is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state and city, latent demand estimates are created for non-electronic non-sports-oriented action and skill games. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

River of No Return (Choose Your Own Adventure No. 178)

River of No Return (Choose Your Own Adventure No. 178) Review

See more picture

I think that The River of No Return is my favorite book because it has a lot of choises. I like deciding which way to go. This book has a lot of adventure in it. I have read the book 4 times and each time it has a different outcome. You're on a whitewater rafting trip along Montana's Anacasta River. Plunging through the rapids in a rubber raft is exciting--and dangerous. There's a reason why the Anacasta is called the River of No Return. Go one way, and you'll have a safe trip down the river. Go another, and you'd better be wearing your life vest!

Puts the kids to sleep. - Tony America -
I bought this book based on the other reviews. I was very disappointed. My kids can't stand the story, and find the main characters unrealistic, and dull. They fell asleep right away. I tried to read it to them the following evening and was met with intense protest from my youngest child. The "River of No Return" will its self soon be returned! Who writes those reveiws?

River of No Return - -
River of No Return, the best book of all time is my favorite book. This book is interesting because it's adventurous and intense. Another reason I enjoy this book is because it gives you a lot of choices.
